Denmark Design
2017.11.23(Thu)- 12.27(Wed)
End of the exhibition
Denmark is the Northern European country that produced Andersen’s fairy tales, Lego and other items well-known even in Japan. Approximately 5.7 million people live in the small country, which is about the size of Kyushu and is known as the happiest country in the world.
Denmark is also a design powerhouse that continues to turn out great numbers of design masters, even within the Northern European design boom of recent years. In particular, in the so called mid-Century period following World War II, the golden age in the history of design, Danish designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner and Finn Juhl created a large number of outstanding items. These objects’ simple beauty, combined with high quality unpinned by functionality and technological strength, has been a major characteristic of Danish design up to the present day. They reveal Denmark’s approach as a welfare state, an approach that advocates everyone having a good quality, comfortable home.
Drawing on academic cooperation from Denmark’s Designmuseum Danmark, this exhibition focuses on the appeal of Danish design by presenting furniture, tableware, light fittings, daily necessities and other items from the latter half of the 19th Century, through the mid-Century period to the present day, under one roof.
